Trailer Weight Distribution: How to Balance Loads in 53′ Vans and Flatbeds

Trailer weight distribution comes down to package weight and where each package sits. A truck can be under the gross weight limit and still have too much weight on the drive axles or trailer tandems. It is better to plan this before loading because moving pallets around at the scale takes time, and sometimes there is not much room to work with.

How to Estimate Trailer Load Distribution

A basic moment calculation can help estimate how much cargo weight goes to the trailer tandems and how much transfers through the kingpin.

Weight on trailer tandems = Package weight × (Distance from kingpin to package center ÷ Distance from kingpin to tandems)

Run the calculation for each pallet or package, using the center of the package as the measurement point, then add the results.

This formula only helps plan cargo placement. It does not account for the empty weight of the tractor and trailer, fifth-wheel position, fuel, tandem settings, axle spacing, or weight already sitting on each axle group. All of that still has to be included when checking the complete vehicle.

Trailer Weight Distribution Example

For this example:

  • The tandem center is 36 feet behind the kingpin.
  • A 2,400-pound pallet is centered 12 feet behind the kingpin.

The estimated weight transferred to the trailer tandems is:

2,400 × (12 ÷ 36) = 800 pounds

The remaining 1,600 pounds transfers through the kingpin.

Now move that same pallet back so its center is 27 feet behind the kingpin:

2,400 × (27 ÷ 36) = 1,800 pounds

The pallet did not get any heavier, but the trailer tandems are now carrying another 1,000 pounds. This is why a trailer load calculator needs the package weight and its location. Weight by itself does not tell you enough.

Federal limits on the Interstate System are generally 20,000 pounds on a single axle, 34,000 pounds on tandem axles, and 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. The Federal Bridge Formula, state laws, equipment ratings, permits, and route restrictions can set lower limits.

The loaded vehicle still needs to be weighed. Check the steer, drive, trailer, and gross weights. The calculations give the loading crew a good plan, but the scale gives the final numbers.

Where to Place Each Pallet

Use the actual loaded weight of every pallet, bulk bag, tote, drum, or other package. Include the pallet, liner, banding, dunnage, and anything else going on the truck. A few pounds here and there can add up once the trailer is full. Package weights can also change when the material’s bulk density or fill volume changes.

Equal spacing does not mean balanced trailer load distribution when package weights are different. In most cases, heavier packages should stay closer to the center of the usable loading area, with lighter packages around them. The axle calculations still need to support the final arrangement. Do not stack several heavy pallets at the nose or rear and assume the tandems can correct it later, sometimes they cannot.

Keep an eye on side-to-side weight too. Putting most of the heavy freight along one wall can affect handling and put uneven loads on the tires, suspension, and trailer structure.

Multi-stop routes need another check. After freight comes off at the first stop, the remaining trailer load distribution changes. Plan each stage of the route so the packages left on the trailer are still positioned properly over the axles.

Loading 53-Foot Vans and Flatbed Trailers

  • 53-foot enclosed vans: Set the arrangement before loading blocks access to the nose. Because the physical center can be harder to identify inside an enclosed van, our loading team uses the side frame studs to estimate the trailer’s center and plan package placement from there. Sliding the tandems can move some weight between the drive and trailer axles, but it will not fix every bad loading arrangement.
  • 48- and 53-foot flatbeds: Our team commonly uses the amber side marker light near the middle of the trailer as a reference point when positioning a load. Some newer flatbed trailers also include a weight-distribution marker approximately four feet forward of that light. These reference points can help with initial load placement, but the final arrangement still depends on package weights, axle locations, trailer tare weight, deck ratings, and the complete tractor-trailer setup.

Flatbed cargo also needs its own securement plan. Tie-down placement, working load limits, blocking, and the type of freight all have to be considered. Good trailer weight distribution does not replace proper securement under the FMCSA cargo securement requirements.
